The 3 Types of Wedding Photography (And Why They Work Best Together)

Your wedding day isn't lived in just one way, and it shouldn't be photographed that way either.

The most meaningful wedding galleries aren't created by choosing a single photography style. They're created by blending three different approaches—documentary, guided, and editorial—each serving a unique purpose and telling a different part of your story.

As a Charlotte wedding photographer serving couples throughout North Carolina, I believe every wedding deserves all three. Together, they create a gallery that feels complete, timeless, and unmistakably you.

01 | Documentary Wedding Photography

The real, unplanned moments.

Documentary wedding photography is about preserving your wedding day exactly as it unfolds. These are the moments you can't recreate—the ones that happen naturally when everyone forgets the camera is there.

It's your dad seeing you in your wedding dress for the first time.

Your grandmother wiping away tears during the ceremony.

Your best friend laughing so hard during a toast that everyone else starts laughing too.

Your spouse squeezing your hand during your vows because they're trying not to cry.

These are the photographs that bring you back to exactly how your wedding day felt.

Why it's so important

Documentary photography preserves emotion in its purest form. It allows your wedding gallery to become more than beautiful photographs—it becomes a collection of memories.

As your photographer, my job during these moments is often to quietly step back and allow your story to unfold naturally. Some moments don't need direction.

They simply need space.

Why couples love it

  • Genuine, emotional memories

  • Real reactions that can never be recreated

  • A wedding gallery that tells your story honestly

  • Photographs filled with authentic connection

02 | Guided Wedding Photography

Natural direction for effortless connection.

Let's be honest...

Almost every couple tells me they're awkward in front of the camera.

The good news?

You don't need to know how to pose.

Guided wedding photography isn't about stiff smiles or uncomfortable poses. Instead, I gently direct you with simple prompts and natural movement that allow your personalities to shine.

Maybe I'll ask you to walk together.

Hold each other a little longer.

Whisper something only the two of you know.

Take a deep breath.

Laugh.

Those little moments create genuine expressions that feel effortless rather than forced.

The result is a collection of portraits that feel relaxed, joyful, and completely authentic.

Why it's so important

Without gentle guidance, many couples spend their portrait time wondering what to do with their hands or whether they're standing correctly.

Instead of worrying about the camera, I want you to focus on each other.

I'll take care of the rest.

Why couples love it

  • You never have to wonder what to do

  • Portraits feel natural instead of posed

  • Creates genuine connection and movement

  • Helps you feel comfortable in front of the camera

03 | Editorial Wedding Photography

Intentional. Artistic. Timeless.

There are moments during every wedding day that deserve to be slowed down.

The way your veil catches the wind.

Your carefully chosen florals.

The architecture of your venue.

The light pouring through the windows.

Your wedding dress hanging before you put it on.

Editorial wedding photography is where storytelling meets artistry.

These are the photographs created with intention—carefully considering composition, light, details, and emotion to create images that feel elegant, timeless, and worthy of hanging on your walls for years to come.

They're not about perfection.

They're about creating artwork from one of the most meaningful days of your life.

Why it's so important

You spend months planning every detail of your wedding day.

Editorial photographs honor that investment by showcasing the beauty you've carefully created.

These become the photographs passed down through generations.

Why couples love it

  • Magazine-worthy portraits

  • Beautiful attention to detail

  • Timeless artwork you'll proudly display

  • Elegant images that never go out of style

Why All Three Photography Styles Work Best Together

Your wedding day isn't one emotion.

It isn't one pace.

It isn't one style.

Some moments deserve to be quietly observed.

Some moments deserve gentle direction.

And some deserve intentional artistry.

If your gallery only consisted of candid photographs, you might miss those breathtaking portraits you'll hang above your fireplace.

If everything were posed, you'd lose the spontaneous laughter, tears, and little in-between moments that make your story unique.

If everything were editorial, your wedding could begin to feel like a photoshoot instead of an experience.

The magic happens when these three styles work together.

Documentary photography captures your emotions.

Guided photography captures your emotions.

Guided photography captures your connection.

Editorial photography captures your legacy.

Together, they tell the complete story of your wedding day.

My Philosophy

One of the questions I'm constantly asking myself throughout every wedding is:

"Does this moment need me... or does it need space?"

Sometimes my job is to quietly disappear into the background while your dad sees you in your wedding dress for the first time.

Sometimes it's gently fixing a crooked boutonnière before anyone notices.

Sometimes it's guiding your hands so your portraits feel natural instead of awkward.

And sometimes it's asking you to stand in the perfect patch of light for thirty seconds because I know that image will become the one hanging in your home for decades.

Every wedding asks something different of me.

That's exactly why I don't believe in photographing every wedding the same way.
